SWEETGUM
Liquidambar styraciflua

Sweetgum is a rapid growing native hardwood adapted to moist sites. It has beautiful bright green star-shaped leaves that have a tangy scent when crushed.  It has the most attractive fall color of almost any tree - its leaves turn every color from yellow, orange, red to purple in the fall. The seed from the fruit, often called sweet gum balls, are eaten by squirrels, mammals and migratory birds such as goldfinches and siskins.
