TAIWAN FLOWERING CHERRY
Prunus campanulata

Everyone is familiar with the Cherry blossom festival in Washington DC, but thanks to researchers at the University of Florida, we now have beautiful cherry trees that flower as far south as Orlando and Tampa, Florida! Taiwan Cherries are very low chill, bloom as early as the Redbuds, and are adapted to the hot humid summers of the South. They are the best cherry for the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Myrtle Beach to south Texas. Taiwans have bright reddish-pink flowers and are easy to grow. They produce a small non-edible cherry that is excellent for birds, have an attractive dark reddish cherry bark, and beautiful yellow to red foliage in fall. This tree deserves much more attention and should be planted all over the South!
