JAPANESE MAGNOLIA
Magnolia lilliflora

Japanese Magnolias are among the very first trees to flower in the spring, producing a stunning display of purple-pink flowers when everything else around is still gray and brown.  Unlike native Southern Magnolias, which are evergreen, Japanese Magnolias are deciduous, and lose their leaves in the winter.  They are easy to grow and are relatively small trees, so can fit in a small yard.  Their explosion of color will make you glad you planted some!

There are a number of selections of Japanese Magnolias, all of which have purple-pink blossoms and bloom slightly later than Saucer Magnolias in the spring. They will also produce some flowers during the summer. They are grow as a multi-trunk bush but can be pruned to a tree form as well. Popular varieties include  'Ann', 'Jane', and 'Betty'.
